The Aging Process

As individuals grow older, they experience biological changes, but how they experience these changes varies considerably. Senescence, or the process of aging, "affects different people, and various parts of the body, at different rates" (Zastrow & Kirst-Ashman, 2016, p. 658).

What factors affect the aging process? Why do some individuals appear to age faster than others? In this Discussion you address these questions and consider how, you, as a social worker, might apply your understanding of the aging process to your work with older clients.

Working With the Aging: The Case of Francine

Francine is a 70-year-old, Irish Catholic female. She worked for 40 years as a librarian in an institution of higher education and retired at age 65. Francine has lived alone for the past year, after her partner, Joan, died of cancer. Joan and Francine had been together for 30 years, and while Francine personally identifies as a lesbian, she never came out to her family or to her colleagues. When speaking to all but her closest confidantes, Francine referred to Joan as her “best friend” or her “roommate.” Francine’s bereavement was therefore complicated because she did not feel she could discuss the true nature of her partnership with Joan. She felt that there was little recognition from her family, and even some of her close associates, of the impact and meaning of Joan’s death to Francine. There is a history of alcohol abuse in Francine’s family, and Francine abused alcohol from late adolescence into her mid-30s. However, Francine has been in recovery for several decades. Francine has no known sexual abuse history and no criminal history.

Being a great fan of sporty wear, Nike sports shoes are the products that I find well priced
according to the benefits they offer to a consumer. Price is very important as it is the biggest
driver of most decisions done by consumers. The choice to buy Nike sneakers, despite the prices
being higher than all other sport wear products since 2014, is because of the comfort and
specialized make of the products. Nike has been working to gain a competitive edge that
consumers trust their product is good, and despite their prices being higher, the consumers still
buy the products in large numbers. This pricing strategy used by Nike is very effective as most
sports men and women go for Nike products, despite the higher discriminating prices based on
gender and sport, since the products are well built and customized to fit different sports activities
with minimal or no injuries.

Adolescent Same-Sex Romantic Attractions and Relationships: Implications for Substance Use and Abuse

Substance abuse is a critical problem among youths in the United States.1 Among the groups believed to be at highest risk are those with same-sex sexual orientations— those who are lesbian, gay, or bisexual (LGB).2 Most relevant research has been based, however, on nonrepresentative samples of self-identified LGB youths. For example, one study of 154 LGB youths showed that lifetime substance use, as well as symptoms of substance use (dependency of use and trouble with school, friends, and family), was prevalent and frequent.3 In another recent study of more than 130 predominantly Black and Hispanic LGB youths, substance use rates appeared to be higher than those present in the general adolescent population.4 In that study, 63% of participants had used alcohol, 33% had used marijuana, and 14% had used cocaine in the previous 3 months,5 as compared with corresponding rates for the general adolescent population of 51%, 22%, and 2% (each referring to the previous month).1 Several more recent studies have used population-based data to examine associations between same-sex sexual identity or sexual behaviors and substance use and abuse. Data from the 1993 Massachusetts Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) showed that youths engaging in same-sex sexual behavior were significantly more likely to use alcohol, marijuana, cocaine, and other illegal drugs.6 Similarly, a study focusing on the 1995 Massachusetts YRBS revealed that self-identified LGB youths were more likely than their peers to begin marijuana and alcohol use early (before the age of 13 years), to have higher lifetime rates of crack/cocaine use, and to report more recent use of tobacco.
