Comparison and Contrast of Police Officers as Portrayed on Television and in real life

Police officers are well trained soldiers who ensure that there is order and security in the society
through enforcing the law. The police officers as portrayed on television are similar to the real
life officers in that they all maintain order, ensure that the citizens are complying with the law
and are habitually holding guns to deter crime. The police officers in most television shows are
frequently intervening and resolving conflicts, ensuring that the streets stay clear of wrongful
doers and there are no drugs that are being sold.

The other similarity of the police officers as shown on television and in real life is that they
regularly use motorbikes, bicycles or police cars or lorries that have their logo and sirens to stop
people who they suspect are doing wrong. In real life, police officers move around using these
means to ensure that they patrol all areas well and that the public is well protected. Police
officers also use their sirens, and when the suspects do not stop, they pursue them using any
means they have available on television shows. In real life, police officers also pursue the
suspects with the vehicles or bikes that they have officially, with sirens on to ensure that they
stop the people they are pursing.

The police officers in real life and on television differ in that there is generally less shooting and
usage of guns in real life, unless all other possible means of interventions are exhausted and there
was great danger posed to an officer or a member of the public. On television, killings are easily
done and dismissed once they have happened, as the police officers involved are seen as heroes
for having done the actions. In real life, police officers have to use fire sparingly and only when
it is evident that a life could be lost if fire is not used. After a shooting has occurred, police
officers in real life also undergo a trial to prove that the shooting was not malicious and that in
deed there was no other means of stopping the assailants except for the use of fire. The trial
determines if the officer continues serving the community as an officer or if they are stopped if
their actions were questionable.

In real life, officers and the community usually have a detached relationship and the only time
officers are consulted are only when there are serious matters involved such as death of
community members, burglary, mob beating among others. On television, the police officers are
shown to have a very interactive relationship with the community. Television shows ordinarily
portray police officers as approachable and that they resolve all the problems presented to them.
In reality, police officers are typically feared, they ask for fines and penalties for crimes or civil
wrongs that the community do and are usually very authoritative to an extent that the relationship
with the community is sour. When most people, especially business men in industries such as the
transport industry and private car owners, see the police officers approaching, they habitually run
away as they fear to be caught in such wrongs as over speeding, driving under the influence or
unroadworthy vehicles among others. The community also fears that the police will harass them
as they go about doing their duties through asking a lot of questions. In conclusion, police
officers relationship with the community is a bit different from how it is shown on television.

Discussion 1: Social Justice

As a social worker, you will often work with clients that are perceived as "others." This "otherness" often leads to marginalization and barriers or limitations promoted by society and social institutions. Marginalization is arguably the most dangerous form of oppression (Adams, 2013) because it eventually leads to social expulsion and material deprivation. Social work is a unique profession because it empowers those who are affected by the socially constructed barriers and biases that have perpetuated long-standing inequalities. As you begin your work with clients both as an intern and social worker, it is imperative to consider not only the individual (micro) concerns the client brings to the session but the environmental or macro factors that may have either created or perpetuated the concern. *Be sure to measure and cut only the length you need for this experiment. Reserve the remainder for later experiments.

Attention!

Do not allow the open end of the dialysis tubing to fall into the beaker. If it does, remove the tube and rinse thoroughly with water before refilling it with the starch/glucose solution and replacing it in the beaker.

Note:

If you make a mistake, the dialysis tubing can be rinsed and used again.

Dialysis tubing must be soaked in water before you will be able to open it up to create the dialysis “bag.” Follow these directions for this experiment:

1. Soak the tubing in a beaker of water for ten minutes.

2. Place the dialysis tubing between your thumb and forefinger, and rub the two digits together in a shearing manner. This motion should open up the “tube” so that you can fill it with the different solutions.

The goal of this assignment is to provide you with an overview of the geologic features and geologic history of Florida. To complete this assignment, you will use two sources: (1) the document titled Hines Geology of Florida.pdf available on Canvas in the link to Assignment 4 and (2) the following website: http://fdep.maps.arcgis.com/apps/MapSeries/index.html?appid=992bf1a70b734dbea8487aabb6ed5bee (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.

The website provides a brief history of Florida by clicking on the different geologic time periods on the left. By clicking on the “Legend” you can see the estimated elevations, and more importantly, see which areas of Florida were above and below sea level (and the approximate shape of the coastline) during that period. In the questions, I refer to these two sources as the pdf and website, respectively.

The pdf has a glossary of terms in the back that may be helpful. Other terms that may be helpful. Highstand and lowstand refer to times of high and low sea level, respectively. Laurentia refers to a continental landmass that largely includes North America and Greenland prior to formation of Pangea. Gondwana refers to a continental landmass that largely included Africa, South America, and Australia, prior to formation of Pangea.
